Jun 10, 2017the oed says yep developed as a colloquial alternative to yes in the late 19th century in the us. Looking at the definitions given for yeah, yeh, yep, or yup, all those words are defined as exclamation & noun nonstandard spelling of yes, representing informal pronunciation. Being one of the most used words in the english language, yea probably was said as yep and yup in many.

Yup is more of a schwa sound, while yep sound more like “eh.” i don’t think one is substantially more common over the other, and i can’t really think of a difference between them.
